My Daughter and Son-in-law recently decided to buy a very large manufactured home from Clayton Homes in upper East TN. The lot models were very well laid out and quite unexpectedly well decorated and they were very excited to choose their floor plan and design their new home as promised by sales and management.

Their home sold almost immediately and they moved into a rental home temporarily. That is when the trouble began. First concession they had to make was to go from nine foot ceilings to eight because Clayton did not do a site evaluation before they paid for the home. This was disappointing but into every life a little rain must fall right?

Well it didn't end there. In fact this was just the tip of the iceberg. By the time Clayton was through with them, this was not only "not Clayton's fault" but it was somehow my Daughter and her Husbands fault and there was no price adjustment. Then we discovered their provided site preparation services were over three times the going rate so we had to hire our own which infuriated Clayton and changed the entire climate of their service.

They submitted (so far) three sets of plans that were not drawn as decided in the planning meetings. Each time they drew up a new set of plans they moved the build date further out without telling my Daughter. The level of rudeness from the staff was nothing short of staggering. They have screamed, threatened, and flat hung up on us when asking the simplest of questions and the most recent development was that they started construction but put the towing hitch on the wrong end of the house and upped the cost by $800.00 dollars to change it.

If it wasn't changed this would result in the back of the house facing the road instead of the front of the house!!! When we asked why this cost was up to us to pay the sales man literally threw a screaming fit and hung up the phone telling us we could go elsewhere if we wanted. With all the hidden costs, delays, rudeness and downright threatening behavior at times I would STRONGLY advise you to shop elsewhere. They have repeatedly broken their word, added hidden costs and upcharges and simply treated us with disrespect and dishonesty.

By the way, once you finally get to the end of the process you are just barely short of what a quality site built home would cost.

Please think and pray before you deal with Clayton homes. It was honestly a HUGE mistake.

BUYER BEWARE OF CLAYTON HOMES. The company is owned by the same company that is the lender for their homes - 21st Mortgage.

They are owned by Berkshire Hathaway of Maryville, TN - which is owned by WARREN BUFFETT of "bad business fame." ALSO, a part of their company is Vanderbilt Mortgage. Clayton Homes OWNS 21st Mortgage who holds 180,000 mortgages in 46 states and is worth $900 billion.

AND, they are after us owning $34,000 and have already paid over $100,000 in payments and penalties. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!
